Corten Steel – Elba Island, Tuscan Archipelago National Park
Metal Gutta working alongside their partner company Archirest Ltd manufactured a double-seamed roof and wall cladding for this property on the picturesque and idyllic Elba, an island located in the North Tyrrhenian Sea, part of the Tuscany Archipelagos. This island is not only famous for its beautiful and peaceful scenery, but also for its historic significance as this was the island where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled in 1814 before escaping to France 10 months later and starting the “War of the Seventh Coalition”. Additionally, Elba was once renowned for its rich Iron deposits, with the Romans famously visiting to construct their swords, allowing for their many victories and inception of their empire.
Despite being an
important and famous tourist destination, most of the land is protected and the
rules around building are incredibly strict. For this particular cliffside
villa that Archirest Ltd and Metal Gutta worked on, stone and iron were chosen
as the materials for building, keeping in line with the harmonious relationship
the island has with natural resources and history.
From the resorts
website “Chalet Poggio Turco has been reconstructed to resemble the ancient
structure and has been conceived under the banner of eco-sustainability,
preserving the use of wood, in line with the project of enhancing the value of
our territory. The new Chalet Poggio Turco combines modernity and respect for
nature, ensuring a peaceful vacation without sacrificing modern comforts.”
Archirest Ltd, an
associate company of the Metal Gutta group of companies, made the double-seamed
roof and wall cladding in naturally oxidized CORTEN. CORTEN steel is a
corrosion-resistant steel alloy. The result is what you see here: a perfectly
tuned harmony between nature and architecture. The full extent of Metal Gutta
and Archirest’s work was manufacturing: roofing and cladding, doors, window
frames, fascias, sills, flashings and creating a balcony and handrails. A
rather large undertaking, but the final results were breath-taking.
The CORTEN steel
sheeting was aged on site by the incredibly talented engineers, which created a
beautiful rusting aesthetic, which fit in perfectly with the islands existing
natural presence and created an amazing semblance and juxtaposition of the
brick and steel work.
